WHAT IS COASTEERING?
Coasteering is a unique way to explore and be guided along the tidal level of the coastline. Coasteering incorporates swimming, low level climbing, sluices, whirlpools and deep-water cliff jumps. You’ll be wearing a wetsuit, trainers or water shoes, buoyancy aid and a helmet as you navigate you way around the Cornish coastline taking on various elements designed to raise your adrenaline.
I’VE NEVER BEEN COASTEERING BEFORE. CAN I STILL DO IT?
Yes. 99% of the people that join us have no prior coasteering experience. At Salt Air Adventures we pride ourselves of offering bespoke coasteering adventures and tailoring the experience to meet your needs and experience.
DO I NEED TO BE A STRONG SWIMMER?
No you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to come coasteering. On arrival we will ask you to complete our participation form. On this we ask if you are able to swim 50 meters unaided. If you cant or are a weak or nervous swimmers this will make it known to their guides and they will be able to help you in the water. You will be wearing a buoyancy aid which will assist you in the water and all of our guides are qualified lifeguards.
IS COASTEERING SAFE?
Yes, Coasteering is very safe. It is however an adventurous activity and as such carries a certain amount of risk. Salt Air Adventures’ guides will always measure the risk before and during your coasteer with regards to your ability and the day’s sea conditions. If our guides feel it is unsafe to continue the coasteer at any point they will stop the coasteer for your safety. All of our Coasteering guides have years of experience as well as being qualified lifeguards and in house trained & assessed to the highest standard. We aim to go above and beyond the safety standard set out by the National Coasteer Charter and your safety in the water is always paramount.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
Typically a Coasteering session is three hours long in total, including time to sign in and get changed. You will spend around two hours Coasteering from once you are in a wetsuit.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
Salt Air Adventures will provide all the safety equipment that you need. All we ask you to bring is something to wear under your wetsuit like a swimming costume, a towel and a pair of closed toe shoes, such as trainers to wear in the water.
WHAT AGES IS COASTEERING SUITABLE FOR?
Children 8 years and older are welcome to come coasteering. We will endeavour to match certain group demographics together such as families with families, however please note that this is not always possible. If you are worried about your child Coasteering and concerned about weather its suitable please get in touch.
HOW HIGH ARE THE JUMPS?
Depending on the sea state, tide and your jumping ability you will given the opportunity to progress from small belly flops, medium sized jumps through to jumps of up to 30 feet (10meters).
DO I HAVE TO DO THE JUMPS?
No not at all. You don’t have to do any of the jumps if you don’t want to. You will always be given the option to challenge yourself, but in no way will you have to do any part of the Coasteer that you don’t want to. We want you to enjoy yourself not feel pressurised into doing something you’re not comfortable doing.
WHAT TIME DO COASTEERS START EACH DAY?
We run coasteers through out the day, with a morning session at 10am and afternoon session at 2pm. Times sometimes vary dependent on the tide and conditions of the day but we will advise you of this upon booking. During July and August we also offer a sunset coasteer.
DO I NEED TO BE FIT FOR COASTEERING?
You don’t need to be super fit to participate in our Coasteer sessions. As with any outdoor adventure activity some physical exercise will be required although this will be typically done at your own pace.
CAN I WEAR MY OWN WETSUIT?
Yes you are more than welcome to bring your own wetsuit. Due to the nature of coasteering being in and around rocks you may prefer to wear the wetsuits that we provide.
CAN I WEAR MY GLASSES WHEN COASTEERING?
If you really cant see then yes its best to wear your glasses. A piece of string or shoe lace will help to keep them connected. Contact lenses are fine to keep in whilst coasteering we don’t tend to have too many issues with this.
ARE YOUR COASTEER GUIDES QUALIFIED?
Due to the nature of coasteering there is currently no national governing body who awards an accredited qualification for coasteering. Salt Air Adventures is one of many companies across the country who have formed the National Coasteer charter, which sets a high standard for what coasteer guides should be trained to and what qualifications they should hold. We deliver ongoing in-house staff training and monitoring to ensure our guides knowledge and experience continues to grow and that they stay up to date with the latest first aide and rescue techniques. Your Coasteering session will always be delivered by two or more qualified and experienced Coasteer guides.

WHAT IF IT’S RAINING?
As long as we deem the sea conditions to be safe to conduct a Coasteer session we will head out in the rain. Being by the coast we often find the weather changing quite quickly so there’s no surprise to head out in the rain only to find the sun come out by the end of the session. In the world of water sports you’re going to get wet anyway!
WILL IT BE COLD?
We will always endeavour to keep you warm. We use full length winter wetsuits all year round.
WILL MY COASTEERING BE CANCELLED IF THE WEATHER IS BAD?
If we have to cancel a session for any reason we will always endeavour to provide another activity either on the same day or within the duration of your stay. If however we cannot due to bad weather we will issue an open activity voucher. Please see our terms and conditions for further details.
